CMATD Organizational Development in Healthcare, Special Interest Group (SIG):

The multitude of challenges facing healthcare organizations today is enormous.  As OD professionals we are on the front lines of managing change initiatives, shaping emerging leaders, and fostering innovation.This SIG is designed as an open forum to allow for the sharing of ideas and best practices around topics that are relevant to us. To focus our discussion, each meeting is focused on a specific topic.

April Topic: Lean

Facilitators: Sylvia Dunster, Jay Spitulnik, Cally Nault

Facilitators: 

Jay Spitulnik is an organizational consultant who has provided performance improvement, training, assessment, and development to healthcare systems, academic institutions, and various other industries for more than 30 years.  Having worked with organizations in healthcare, financial services, and nuclear energy, he has extensive experience applying the principals of quality improvement and quality management in highly regulated environments. Jay is certified as a Six Sigma Green Belt by the American Society for Quality and as a Certified Performance Technologist by the International Society for Performance Improvement.  Currently, Jay teaches both undergraduate and graduate students in health professions at Northeastern University and is completing the requirements for his PhD in Organizational Psychology.

 


Sylvia Dunster joined Reliant Medical Group, located in Worcester, MA, in 2013 as a Lean/ Kaizen Promotion Specialist. Before joining Reliant, Sylvia worked for Staples, Inc. as Contract Strategy Project Manager in the contract print department, helping to repair broken processes such as their inventory control procedure and save the department over $13 million by consolidating and allowing reporting on inventory. She has over 10 years progressively responsible experience in managing process improvement projects ranging in value up to $50 million in cost savings or sales increase.

Since joining Reliant, Sylvia has designed and revised several Lean and Project oriented training packages such as Lean 101; Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis and Project Management 101.  She presented a well-received storyboard and corporate information booth at the 2013 Northeast Shingo Prize conference held in Hyannis, MA. She is currently involved in primary care redesign projects such as a care team model for both internal medicine and pediatrics, and has been a part of the committee charged with redesigning the facilities for the future.

Sylvia is Six Sigma Black Belt trained and currently pursuing certification through the American Society for Quality, and is also planning to obtain her Project Management Professional certification this year. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Becker College and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Nichols College.

 

Carolyn (Cally) Nault joined Reliant Medical Group (Fallon-Clinic) located in Worcester, MA in November of 1988 as a clerk typist.    Cally went on and studied to learn Medical Terminology and became a Medical Transcriptionist after the first year.  Cally transcribed for all the providers at Fallon-Clinic/Reliant Medical Group and became the Assistant Supervisor for the Transcription Department.  In August of 2012, Cally took a position as the Senior Administrative Assistant for the Kaizen Promotion Office.  Cally co-facilitated the Change Integration Board program for Lean at Reliant with different Lean Specialists.  She also assisted in the Patient Care Improvement System Steering Committee Meetings with the Executive Team.  Cally is co-facilitating the Provider Onboarding project to enable providers to start seeing a full complement of patients in less time and also co-facilitating a project to reduce $500K in financial leakage for a subsidiary of RMG.  Cally has gone on in the past year to shadow and be mentored by the Lean Specialists and assisting them on projects and doing process flow mapping for projects as well as being the administrative person for the office.  
Cally studied Executive Secretarial courses at Quinsigamond Community College and took Microsoft classes in Word, Excel and Power Point.  To satisfy her hunger for knowledge, Cally has attended assorted conferences and internal and external classes over the years.

Holden Conference Room at Reliant Medical Group, Worcester Office Tower at 100 Front Street, Worcester, MA for our April 9th SIG Meeting.  This room is located on the 10th Floor at the Worcester Office Tower building.  There is a parking garage located right around the corner that you can access the building from at Commercial Street.  It is called the Commercial Street Parking Garage.  Parking passes will be available for everyone so you will not have to pay for the parking.   You can walk from the garage through the catwalk up on the top floor and come right into 100 Front Street.  Go down the escalator and take the elevator up to the 10th Floor. 

Directions to Location:

From Points North:


Take I-190 South to I-290 West to Exit 16 (Central Street). At the end of ramp, turn right onto E. Central St. Go straight through the next set of lights onto MLK, Jr. Boulevard and underneath the metal bridge (you will see the DCU Center in front of you). At the 2nd intersection, take a left onto Commercial Street. Proceed through the next intersection; the Commercial Street Parking Garage will be on your left. After parking in the garage, look for signs that say “Front Street” which are located on the 1st or 3rd floors of the parking garage. Follow the signs to 100 Front Street (Worcester Office Tower).


From Points South:


Take Route 146 North to I-290 East. Take I-290 East to Exit 16 (Central Street). At the end of the ramp turn left onto E. Central St. Go straight through the next set of lights onto MLK, Jr. Boulevard and underneath the metal bridge (you will see the DCU Center in front of you). At the 2nd intersection, take a left onto Commercial Street. Proceed through the next intersection; the Commercial Street Parking Garage will be on your left. After parking in the garage, look for signs that say “Front Street” which are located on the 1st or 3rd floors of the parking garage. Follow the signs to 100 Front Street (Worcester Office Tower).


From Points East:


Take the Mass. Pike West to Exit 11, I-495. Take I-495 North to I-290 West to Exit 16 (Central Street). At the end of the ramp, take a right onto E. Central St. Go straight through the next set of lights onto MLK, Jr. Boulevard and underneath the metal bridge (you will see the DCU Center in front of you).
