Team Emotional Intelligence

If you are a leader, you have likely experienced the challenge of engaging a team of people and aligning them to collaborate effectively. Leaders who create high-performing teams and successfully navigate through the messy people issues understand the central role that emotion plays in teams. Team Emotional Intelligence (TEI) is a framework that will help you understand how leaders can build a productive emotional environment. TEI complements existing methodologies; it enhances them and provides a missing piece of the team effectiveness puzzle by providing a map for building an environment that supports awareness and processing of emotion in teams. Doing so enables a leader to take advantage of emotions in the team and use them productively to engage team members, reduce tensions and other “people” issues, which naturally moves the team to higher performance. Join us for a discussion where you will:

  • Learn the basic elements of the Team Emotional Intelligence framework.
  • Understand how and why it works.
  • Learn of an instrument to measure TEI that helps a leader engage the team in discussions that create psychological safety and reduce “people” issues but do not become emotionally charged.
  • Hear about case experiences.

Dr. Steven Wolff has over ten years’ experience as a professor teaching and researching team effectiveness and leadership. Together with Vanessa Druskat, Steven has developed a theory of group emotional intelligence that extends the theory of individual emotional intelligence to the group level. His publications have appeared in Harvard Business Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, and others. He worked as a research consultant at HayGroup, where he helped Richard Boyatzis and Daniel Goleman develop their second generation EI instrument (the ESCI), and has 15 years’ experience in the high-tech industry as an engineer and manager. Steven holds degrees in electrical engineering, an MBA and a DBA in organizational behavior and is a member of the Consortium for Research on EI in Organizations (CREIO).
